Having an online business means I deal with many documents and files. If ever my computer were to get a virus or stop working I would lose all my hard work. This is one of the best back-up solutions that I was able to find online. It’s also a small cost to have this type of protection. In the past I have used other back-up solution and they converted files into some unknown format which I could not use if I stopped paying for the service. The easiest way to send and receive faxes is with a fax service. When you fax from your own machine you have two options. You need to buy a fax machine and either share the line with your main home phone or get a dedicated phone line. If you share the line then there is always the chance that you miss the fax or that someone will call when you’re faxing. This is a real pain I have had that happen to me and I had to call the company I was faxing to see if they had the whole document that I was faxing. You can also use a computer modem with fax feature to fax from the computer, but again you need to share your phone line. If you get a second line then it’s going to cost a lot just to be able to fax. The best way is to have an online service that does not depend on your phone line. These services can be paid for as you go or on a monthly plan. You can send and receive faxes and its all handles through the online companies phone lines. When you sign up for the account they provided you with either software that you install on your computer or a web page that you sign into. Once you are set up all you need is a printer with a built in scanner and you are ready to go. One service that works very well for online faxing is Metro Fax they offer a trail account and you can send a few test faxes to see how the service works. If you send out a few faxes a month these online service are a must for a business owner.

A few weeks ago I bought the Mac Heist Bundle. This is a bundle of software that comes out about once a year. The company that puts out the bundle shares some of the profit with charities. The nice thing about this years bundle was if they sold a certain number they would unlock the Rapid Weaver web site creation software. This is a very solid program that cost $79, but with the bundle it was only $19.99, which was a great deal. The Mac Heist bundle also had many other programs included in that price.

With all the web sites I create and landing pages, I am always looking for an easy to use programs that can help build my sites quickly. The Rapid Weaver program was not hard to work with, but it did take a little effort reading and watching videos from the company web site. Once I figured out the basics I was making web sites that looked professional. The included templates can be customized for just about any project. There are also many templates that you can buy only for Rapid Weaver, plus many plug-ins to increase the function of your web site project.

The first site I worked on was an old celebrity fan site I had forgotten about. It was about time to give this site a makeover and add new content. The first page on the site I just added regular text and placed my content. The only problem I had was setting up Google Adsense the ads never did show up on the site. When I tried placing some affiliate banners the program accepted the HTML and the banners showed up on my site. At least I was able to monetize the site with banners. Looking online for information on getting Adsense to work I was unable to find any information that would help.

At $19.99 Rapid weaver was a steal. This is a full feature program that can truly create great looking web sites. If you paid the full $79 price tag then there are many other programs to buy for the PC or Mac that have more features. Still at $79 it is one of the better web site creations programs on the Mac. Overall I would recommend this program for those who need an easy program to make web sites on the Mac, but then again the new version of iWeb has many of the feature found in Rapid weaver and it comes free with every Mac as part of iLife. The software used for this type of communication is built into the Mac OS as the speech function. You can use this function to read text in Word or text pad.

If you caught the episode of Oprah with Roger Ebert then you might have heard his new voice. After four years of not being able to use his voice due to being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago Sun-Times critic appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to debut the fruit of some Scottish computer programmers’ labour, a voice that actually sounds like him. If you can imagine not having a voice a voice that was his bread and butter as a movie reviewer on television Roger has overcome his disability. With the help of his Mac Book and software he can now communicate with the world. If you have ever used a program like MacSpeech then you are familiar to the type of software that Roger Ebert is using to communicate. He is not the first to use computer speech to communicate, but he certainly is a poster boy for what technology can do for people with a speech problem. The technology that allows people speak through their computers has also gone down in price. You just need a computer and software which would run about $1200 something that was once out of reach for many. This technology has also made it easy for anyone to communicate and get work done that was once impossible. You can dictate your blog posts as you watch TV or read the newspaper. The software has improved over the years from my early start with programs like Dragon Dictate to super programs like MacSpeech. In the early days it took a very long time to teach the software to understand what you were saying and there were mixed results when speech converted to text. The new programs are almost perfect and understand more accents and pronunciation. Even my cell phone has speech recognition software. The effort of all the speech recognition programs must be noted as this technology is often forgotten or ignored even though there is so much value in what it can do.

If you work on your own web sites at some point you need to edit an image. The top choices for my business needs are the following:

1. GIMP which is a free download and is an open source project to match PhotoShop. This easy to use photo editing software is the best choice for those on a budget and need something free and that works well. There are so many features that a newbie might get a little lost. There are a few books on GIMP, but most people who have worked with PhotoShop should not have any trouble getting the program to do what they want. GIMP is available for all computer OS’s.

2. Microsoft Digital Image Standard

You might have to look around for this one. It might no longer be for sale by Microsoft. This program cost form $60 to $100 and is very easy to use. Many of my logo’s and photo editing projects are done through Microsoft Digital Image. It might be one Microsoft product that just works. We have to give them credit for making a good program. The lite version of PhotoShop would be in the same price range and match most of the features. This is one of the most used programs in my tool box and I have used it for hundreds of projects. Would like to see Microsoft update this product and continue to support it.

These two programs are my favorites to edit images. With these two programs on my computer I have been able to make web sites look like a pro design them without spending much money. Many people work with PhotoShop and I hear great things about the software, but the cost goes beyond most budgets. At some point I would like to buy PhotoShop and learn how to use it. In the meantime these low cost solutions do a great job for what I need.

This has to be the best kept SEO secret. The last few days I have been playing around with an SEO package from LinkAssistant. The best part is the basic package is 100% free and can be downloaded to any computer. It does not matter is you have a PC MAC or Linux this software is going to work on your system. There were keywords I found on a few of my sites that were in the top 10 which is a very cool way to try to make some money.
