This year Santa arrived a little early and dropped off a new Pandigital eBook reader. The unit has a 7 inch screen and uses full color. The Pandigital has Android built-in which makes this more of a tablet then an eBook reader. The unit does feel nice and does not have that cheap feeling to it. The built in apps have everything a user would want out of the box. You get a browser email and yes eBook reader app. The built in WiFi worked well even at a distance form the router. The nice thing is that you can also sideload apps on the device. The reader does not have a marketplace, but you can find lots of apps that will work without much trouble. The easiest way to add content is to use a PC or Mac to fill an SD card with folders and files. Once you have your videos music and pictures on an SD card the Pandigital does a great job of handling various media types.

The screen is nice and bright and scrolling with my finger was not a problem. You do get a stylus that you can use to tap and navigate with, but I found the touch response was for most part good. If you are looking for a cheap tablet PC or eBook reader then I think the Pandigital will be a nice addition and at the low price these things sell for you do not have much to complain about. The device should not be compared with an Apple iPad as it is nowhere as feature rich, but for what it is you do get a lot for your money and at under $200 it’s a nice unit to surf the web or catch up on emails and Facebook.

There are many sites with hacking tips for the Pandigital and it might be possible to get more out of this low price tablet with a little effort.

The next few months will be exciting for those wanting a pad computer, but do not want to buy and Apple iPad. With many manufactures coming out with pads running Android prices are going to be great for consumers. There are pads on the market for as low as $149 and the average price for a well built pad will be about $300-$399 which is the premium price point. If you can wait and avoid the Apple iPad you will be rewarded with some great devices and save some money. If you have used an Android smartphone then you know that there are thousands of apps. The market for pads is growing and consumers are in a win situation. If I buy an Android based pad I would be willing to pay around $250 for a 10 inch pad with minimum 16g built in with support for additional storage. The Samsung Galaxy S pad looks great, but it might only be offered from cell phone providers on a contract to a data plan. One new pad that looked great is the Archos 10 inch media pad running Android and with a very cool design. As I consume more and more media on portable devices I also want to be able to get services like Netflix and flash. It does look like many pad makers are adding support for Adobe Flash and this is a clear one up on the Apple iPad. The HP camp is also working on pads with the WebOS they recently bought from Palm. This might be a great alternative against Apple and Android, but it’s the apps that make the platform. Not so sure I would want a pad running Windows 7, but if Microsoft could put out a pad with Windows 7 mobile or the Zune HD OS they could be a challenge for the third place in the pad wars. It all comes down to price and the apps that your pad will run. If you plan on buying a pad make sure it meets your requirements. As I prepare to buy a pad computer I have written down all the features and apps I would like to have based on this list I can make a decision as to which pad I will buy.

Quality is also very important when buying a pad. You want something that will work. Nothing worse then buying a pad and not being able to control the touch screen. If possible try to test that model you want to buy or if you buy online make sure you can return your pad if it does not meet your standards.
    Which pad will you buy?
