A few months ago I bought a Sony eBook reader. This has to be one of the coolest gadgets that I have ever bought. As an avid reader I love the fact that I can download eBooks from the Sony Store Online in seconds. This does take the joy out of visiting my local book store, but it’s so convenient.

The eBook reader cost me $279.99 at the Sony Store. The salesperson marked it down as I missed a sale a few weeks prior. The unit is solid it feels well made and it is very light weight. In comparison to a real book, you will notice the difference between the eBook Reader and for example a book like Snowball which is 800 pages long. The Sony eBook reader is not only an eBook reader, but also a picture viewer and MP3 Player. The sound from the MP3 player is fantastic one of the best players that I have ever tested. You can listen to music while you read, but the controls are a little odd. If Sony could have made a better interface to control the music while reading, I would use the MP3 player a lot more. The picture viewer is just an extra it has no real value as the picture are shown in black and white.The unit also comes in brown leather cover. The cover helps protect the screen and it looks great.

The main reason to buy this item was to read books. As an eBook reader it is amazing with a screen true to a real book. The ink technology used makes reading on the device very easy on the eyes. It’s almost like reading a real book. You might notice a little difference at first and pages take a few seconds to load, but other wise it very close to reading a real book. At present I have over 1000 eBooks loaded on the memory card (It takes SD and Memory Stick plus built in memory). It is not often that I need to send a fax. The times I do need to send a fax I just go over to the post office or staples and just pay a few buck. Then I kind of felt silly that I had to pay about $3.00 to send a fax on average. In a year I guess I could spend about the same amount of money that it would cost to buy a fax machine. The other thing about sending a fax from a public place is that your information is seen by the person handling the machine, which can also make a copy of your document. With a little research I noticed Staples was selling a machine for $59.99, so I went to the store to pick up this machine. When I got to the store I thought I would look into a USB fax modem(New Mac’s and PC might not have a built in modem). There was a US Robotics model that cost $79.99, I figured it would take less space then a fax machine and was one less big item in my office. The box said it should work with Mac PC and Linux. Well I got home and tried to install it on my Mac, nothing on the box mentioned which version of the OS I needed. The result was that I could not use it on my 2 year old mac with out an upgrade. Option two install on the new Dell with Vista Premium. Again I had a problem. The modem installed, but this verison of Windows does not have a built in fax sending program, you need to buy a $20.00 program on the Internet. After spending about 30 minutes looking for information I found the program and downloaded a 30 day free trial. This option worked and the software was very easy to use, I had a 2 pages fax sent in just a few minutes of installing this software. The last option was to try and install it on my Asus EEE PC with Linux.

This also encountered some problems. The Linux OS did find the modem, but I had no clue how to set the fax program. Still looking into this just in case I ever need to send a fax on the go. Well in the end Vista Premium and the free trail program were the only option to make this work. Why Microsoft took this feature out and added it to only Ultimate and Business versions show another cash grab from M$. Still wish I could get this to work with my MAC with out having to upgrade the OS.

That’s right I am both, the sites I create are done on both platforms. Why do I need 2 systems? Well to start I use the Mac because it is secure and less problems occur. The Mac is my main computer and the one I am using write now to write this post. Here is a breakdown of what I use each computer for:

Those are the top uses for my computers. The PC is also connected to the HDTV sometimes and I use it also with my Xbox 360.

Now which do I prefer, as a Mac Fanboy I must say I get a lot of work done on the Mac. It has been a steady work horse and never given me any problems. The PC fits in for the odd task I can not get done on the Mac or can not find software. In Canada there is hardly and tax software, so the PC is a must at tax time.

In most case many households have more then one PC, so why not have both and get the best each system has to offer.

Side note I also have a EEE PC Laptop with Linux which I use for travel and to go down to my local Starbucks.

This has allowed me to have two computers set up, yes a mac and pc living together in perfect harmony.  Now when I develop a site or update one of my blogs I can have all the software I need right at my finger tips. It is a very important part of my day to to day business to be able to access things on my desk as quickly as possible.
