Kobo Arc Tablet eBook Reader Review
View Comments
November 29th, 2012Books, Cool Stuff, Smartphones
There are many 7 inch tablets on the market running Android. The Apple iPad mini also competes in this segment. The size is perfect for taking along anywhere and fits easily in a purse or pocket. As readers of this blog have come to know about me is that I love tablets. As a blogger and an online business owner getting things done on the go is extremely important to what I do. After all making money online is my bread and butter and getting taking care of my business in the most effective way is something I take seriously. Now all that said it’s time for my review of the Kobo Arc my latest tablet. I have a tablet form Archos and the original iPad and both have been workhorses. Overtime the Archos has not been able to keep up with all the updates to Android and side loaded Google Play store stopped working properly. I guess I could have spent some time online trying to figure out how to fix that problem, but why when a new tablet is not that expensive and has was better hardware. After doing some research I found three tablets in the 7 inch form factor that would meet my needs. I did not add the Apple iPad mini to the list as I have already invested too much money into apps for Android. The tablets had to have a great screen and a fast processor and be able to handle games. Once in a while a guy’s got to have some fun. The short list came down to the Samsung Galaxy tab 7 2 and the Google Nexus 7 made by Asus and the Kobo Arc. Now here is where things get interesting as the first two tablets are the standard for quality and performance. How would a tablet by a company known for their eBook readers fair? Well it seems the team at Kobo did their homework and have come out with a tablet that I consider top of the heap. With an HD display and over 16 million colors the screen is a pleasure to look at. the type is crisp and even magazines which usually are difficult to read on a screen this size did well. The Android operating system has been slightly customized to a Kobo experience, but under the skin it is a full features Android tablet with Google’s ice cream sandwich 4.04 running this thing at the expected Google experience. After deciding which version of the Arc I was going to buy I was fact with picking from the 16g 32g or the 64g. I settled on the 16 as most things I do on a tablet are not going to fill this thing. I only install apps that help me be more productive and few games to fill in the down time or for when I need a break. If I watch a movie it’s going to stream from Netflix and if I go on a trip and need a few movies I have more than enough space. This tablet is wifi only which means I will be using it mostly where ever I can find a wifi hotspots. I loaded up the OfficeSuite app and the tablet is a pleasure to use for creating content This blog post was written on the go at a Starbucks. The OfficeSuite app save to Dropbox which means that I am not taking up any local storage and have a copy of my document that I can update or edit on my other tablets or computers. This web browser is fast I had no issue with loading pages. With a fast connection this tablet is solid when it comes to performance. All my apps loaded quickly and video played back crystal clear on the HD display. I played a few games one being a Asphalt 7 the car moved smoothly on screen and the graphics displayed without a hitch. Watching Netflix the tablet handles the streaming without so much as stutter. This review would not be complete without mentioning the eBook experience that Kobo has design for the Arc. As the Arc runs full Android with the Google Play store you are not limited to the Kobo eBook app. I loaded Kindle and Sony’s reader app. This is something to keep in mind when buying the Arc the freedom of choice is a great selling point for this device. It’s nice to have all the eBook apps on one device. When I buy books I like to compare prices from the different stores and by doing this you can save a few dollars here and there. The Google eBook store is available through the play store. When I opened up a book in Kobo the reader app loaded quickly and page turns were quick with little lag a plus when reading on this type of device. Overall the Kobo Arc is more than an eBook reader. It is as much a tablet as the Google Nexus 7 and performance is on par with that tablet. The Kobo Arc is a tablet and eBook reader and if you like reading books and also want a device that does more than Kobo hand one a great job and priced this unit at the sweet spot starting at $199 for the 16g version. If you create content then you will not be disappointed with the Kobo Arc. I was able to write and create this blog post fairly quickly. I have installed photo editing software and using a combination of Dropbox to pull the file I was able to edit a picture while I was on the go and not tied up to being at my computer. If I was stuck for a week without my PC I would still be able to function using the Kobo Arc.The picture was borrowed from goodereader.com will replace as soon as I have my own picture take to upload. In the meantime visit their site they have some great review on eBook readers and YouTube videos.

Love My YouTube

The YouTube web site has been around for awhile now and it is credited with changing the way video content is consumed online. The site introduced web surfers to funny unique videos, but the true value of YouTube is the educational content.
If I get stuck trying to do something I check YouTube and see if anyone has created a video that can help me. The other day I was having a problem with with updating my smartphone and in a few minutes I found a video that solved my problem. If you have not used YouTube or just look for funny stuff then try using YouTube to help solve your everyday problems.
The value of YouTube when it come to finding educational content is amazing. When I am looking for reviews on products I always check YouTube for the most part the reviews are from real people with no financial gain. There are a few other sites that work like YouTube, but I find I can get the results I want from YouTube. The nice thing about YouTube is having it anywhere I go I have an app on my smartphone and even my DVD player has an app making it easy to watch content on my television. The average YouTube user might find the site a source for comedy or music clips I on the other hand find it a useful resource to run my online businesses.

Rain Must Fall

May 6th, 2011Goal Setting, Random Stuff
There are times in life when the rain must fall. It’s not always as bad as it seems. There are relationships that change your focus. There are events beyond your control that for better or worse it makes you a stronger person. The events in our life define who we are and where we are going. This week I was faced with a decision that would reduce my income. After thinking things over I knew that the right decision was to make the changes and set a new path. When I was thinking about what options I would have I needed to run over my short list of what losing this income would mean. No matter what path I have taken in the past I always found a way to make money. When I lose a source of income my mind just works over time and new money making ideas just seem to come to me. The choice to lose this income source was to gain more time to spend with my family. In the short run I will miss the money, but a new source of income will appear. Not sure what that source will be, but I will focus all my energy to reach my goal. Sometimes the rain must fall, but if you plant seeds you will be better off in the long run.
The steps I am taking today will give me more time to spend with my family. There will be more time to work out new projects.
They say time is the most precious thing we have and it is very true. It nice to be getting back some of my time even if I lose a bit of income in the process.

Google Docs for Android Review
View Comments
May 3rd, 2011Google, Smartphones, Working On The Go
This post was created using Google docs for Android on a Galaxy S smartphone. As I explore my options for creating content on the go this seemed like a great solution and it’s free. The Google Docs service is also cloud based which means I can work on my document back on my home computer without messing with disc swaps or bluetooth transfers. The creation of a doc on my smartphone was just like typing a text message.
The editing of the document through the google app was limited. There was no way of bolding or editing the text format. The document was going to end up my home computer anyway, and I can edit quickly through the full Google doc web site. As a quick and simple method for creating documents on the go I would say this is a great solution.
The Google Docs app is going to get much use this summer as I travel. This would be a great app to add to the cheap Android tablets as the screen size would be a better experience for touch typing. As I use this app more and more it has started to grow on me, I do think I can get many projects completed with Google docs. If you have an Android phone then make sure to download the Google doc app and you will have a great office suite for free on your smartphone or tablet.
If Google could just add spell check and the ability to format text then you would not need to do a final edit on your computer. There are a few other office suite products for Android that cost from $8.00 to $15.00 that might have a few more features, but aI guess if you can live without the fancy extras you can get a lot done with Google docs and the best part is that it is free.

Getting More Done On The Go

April 27th, 2011Smartphones, Working On The Go
As I spend more time on the go and not sitting in front of my computer I needed to find some mobile solutions. If I could turn my down time when I am on the go or just sitting at a Starbucks in to something productive it would add to my income. As most of the work I do is content creation for my various web sites and blogs it would work out well if I could get more done.
The challenge when I am on the go is having the right tools. In the past I have used a good old fashion notepad and just written down my thought to edit later when I get to a computer. The use of a notebook is a great way to organize ideas, but then I have to enter my work into the computer to post online.
What I would like is to use my Smartphone for writing and then edit on my computer at home when I get a chance. If half the work is inputted then it would be easier to make changes and get my content posted to my sites.
There are many solutions for word processor or office suite products for my Android phone. Now all I need is to get the right program and my ideal scenario would allow me to write on the go.
With so many tools available on my Smartphone I know I could be doing more with this technology.
My first attempt at going mobile and getting more done will start next week. The first step is to create a to do list and then start completing the task that I have set for myself. If I can organize myself first then I will have better grasp of what I need to do.
Once I get into the flow of working on my Smartphone I will start using it more and in time I think this will increase my productivity and income.

Content Web Sites for Money
View Comments
February 25th, 2011Working From HomeOver the last few months I have been creating content based web sites and refreshing my older sites. As I move away from ppc I want to build sites that can rank based on great content. Getting these sites updated with content is time consuming, but it will be well worth it over time.
The way I have organized my effort is to place sites in order of priority. There are sites that need to be updated daily and these are the sites I need to spend the most time working on. Then I have sites like this one that get updates as I have time to write. The last type of sites I have are the ones that take very little effort. These sites just need content updated if there are major changes to the information.
When I set time aside for writing I try to do it late I night. Then I get into the mood with a little research on the topic that I am writing about. As I collect ideas and form my own thoughts I write everything down in a notebook. Once I have enough ideas and a general outline of what I am going to write about I fire up the laptop and start writing in Word.
When I am writing I do not think of the post making money I just want to provide great content that can teach and improve people’s lives. If I can influence people in a positive way with my writing then that is reward enough. If a site makes money then I consider this a reward for a job well done. It’s not about writing to make money it’s about writing for your readers and meeting their needs. If you write with a passion readers know that and take your work serious. If you show a passion for your work readers will return and tell others about your site.
As I have so many sites to update I have used paid writers to gain fresh new content. This has worked well to get new content and to help me fill in the void. If you keep your sites fresh and updated you will be rewarded by the search engines and that’s money in your pocket.

Make Money With Groupons
View Comments
February 10th, 2011Make Money From Home, Working From HomeThe rise of group buying has created a little niche for making money online. Once in awhile there are deals on Groupons for real goods or discounts on the purchase of a certain amount of money. If you can get deal for example where you can buy $50.00 for $25.00 then you can use it to buy goods to resell.
This would work out well at stores where you can buy items that are in demand. I tried this with a local hardware store where I bought a power tool. Then I listed the tool on Craigslist and sold it for a profit.
Next time you are on Groupons look for these types of deals and take advantage of the deal to make some extra money.

Pandigital Novel eBook Reader and Tablet Review
View Comments
December 19th, 2010Netbooks, Pad Computers, Smartphones
This year Santa arrived a little early and dropped off a new Pandigital eBook reader. The unit has a 7 inch screen and uses full color. The Pandigital has Android built-in which makes this more of a tablet then an eBook reader. The unit does feel nice and does not have that cheap feeling to it. The built in apps have everything a user would want out of the box. You get a browser email and yes eBook reader app. The built in WiFi worked well even at a distance form the router. The nice thing is that you can also sideload apps on the device. The reader does not have a marketplace, but you can find lots of apps that will work without much trouble. The easiest way to add content is to use a PC or Mac to fill an SD card with folders and files. Once you have your videos music and pictures on an SD card the Pandigital does a great job of handling various media types. The screen is nice and bright and scrolling with my finger was not a problem. You do get a stylus that you can use to tap and navigate with, but I found the touch response was for most part good. If you are looking for a cheap tablet PC or eBook reader then I think the Pandigital will be a nice addition and at the low price these things sell for you do not have much to complain about. The device should not be compared with an Apple iPad as it is nowhere as feature rich, but for what it is you do get a lot for your money and at under $200 it’s a nice unit to surf the web or catch up on emails and Facebook.
There are many sites with hacking tips for the Pandigital and it might be possible to get more out of this low price tablet with a little effort.
